Berkeley Carroll School: Costa Rica 2016

Friday, March 18, 2016

We learned about farmer Daniel's next project: growing vanilla. We discovered that these 2 year old plants won't be able to reproduce for 4 more years. They have to be pollinated by hand because no animals in Costa Rica know how to pollinate. These vanilla plants are indigenous to Madagascar, where lemurs do the pollinating. Daniel is going to hire single mothers & college students unable to get scholarships to pollinate his vanilla plants in 4 years. We learned that vanilla is the most expensive spice in the world.
